How these actually work is that the mood ring changes colors according to the temperature.

As you probably already know your body changes temperature when you switch moods, anger will make your body hotter while sadness will cool the body down.

Mood rings contain a substance, usually in the form of liquid crystals that is called thermochromic element.

Now, this stuff is sensitive to temperature and changes color based on its temperature.. or in this case the temperature of the wearer of the ring.

When Were Mood Rings Invented?

Mood rings first came to light in the late 1960s, invented by a man named Marvin Wernick. Soon after in the 1970s they became very popular thanks to Joshua Reynolds, and were labeled as the fad of the '70s.
